During the trip, the class differences between him and his working-class porter were shown. As he becomes increasingly afraid of the desert, the merchant's brutality increased and he felt terribly alone without police nearby to protect him. During the course he killed one of his servants, the merchant was being trialled in the court and set free on the grounds that it happened in self-defence which showed that the society served only the rich and it was the poor who paid the price. Govt failed to make useful diplomacy on Kashmir, claims Ahsan

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal has said the government should make serious diplomatic efforts to highlight the Kashmir dispute.Addressing a press conference after a PML-N re-organization committee meeting on Saturday, he said giving more time to the government was tantamount to putting the country’s security and democracy at risk. The PTI government failed to make diplomacy useful for Kashmiris only because ofits inexperience and ineligibility. The former interior minister said Indian should be compelled to lift curfew and end blackout and for this purpose, the government should seek help from the US president and other superpowers. He said the justice system should be transparent and impartial in the country. He demanded if an accountability judge had been transferred on the basis of video evidence which was proved genuine, Nawaz Sharif’s sentence should also be reversed. He said the nomination of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) members had to be made with the consensus of prime minister and the leader of opposition, and the government solely did not have any constitutional right to nominate ECP members. He urged PML-N workers to get prepared for the next general elections as the PML-N would launch a campaign to hold early elections in the country. To a question regarding Kashmir, he said former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had raised voice against atrocities in Indian-held Kashmir during a United Nations session and highlighted the sacrifi-ces of Kashmiris.

$1.1b import compression: FBR faces Rs68 billionshortfall in July, August

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) faced revenue shortfall of Rs68 billion in July and August mainly because of import compression of $1.1 billion on a monthly basis, The News has learnt. The FBR used to collect around 38 percent taxes through imports. The FBR’s net collection on account of Customs Duty (CD) stood at Rs49.8 billion against the desired target of Rs65 billion in the first two months (July and August 2019), registering a negative growth so far.Total Inland Revenue (IR) target was envisaged at Rs286 billion but so far collection stands at Rs250 billion. However, the domestic collection of income tax, sales tax and federal excise duty has fetched Rs152 billion so far in the current fiscal against Rs110 billion in the same period of the last financial year.In IR, overall growth stood at 26 percent as income tax on domestic stage witnessed surge of 39 percent, sales tax on domestic stage 43 percent and imports 17 percent, Federal Excise Duty (FED) on domestic front 46 percent but zero at import stage. The IR domestic collection has been facing shortfall of Rs9 billion for August 2019 envisaged target. The FBR high-ups claimed that this revenue shortfall could be bridged through improved administrative efforts but the collection at import stage is negative for all taxes in the last month. Talking to this correspondent, Chairman FBR Shabbar Zaidi expressed satisfaction over the FBR’s performance for collection of revenues in outgoing month and stated that collection for August 2019 had increased to Rs297 billion and hoped that it would definitely touch Rs298 billion.“With God blessing, we might touch Rs300 billion,” he added. Shabbar said he was more than satisfied with the collection of August 2019 because he was expecting revenue collection in the range of Rs280 billion because there were 10 holidays during the last month on eve of Eidul Azha.He said the FBR used to collect Rs15 billion on average per day basis so it impacted our collection massively. He said the FBR collection witnessed double digit growth as policy measures started yielding positive results. He said import compression had caused problems for FBR’s collection as the Board collected around 40 percent revenues at import stage. He said the FBR arranged commissioners’ conferences six or seven times in last two months in order to streamline the strategy for jacking up revenue collection as much as possible. To another question regarding quarterly target of Rs1,072 billion agreed with the IMF, he said efforts were underway to maximize revenue collection but this collection target was not sacrosanct so adjustments could be made on this front. He said when imports were on decline, the FBR was devising its strategy to cope with the situation arising on collection front. However, sources said that the economy was on contraction and with negative growth of large scale manufacturing the GDP growth for the last fiscal year would be further revise downward from 3.3 percent to 2.9 percent while inflation had already entered into double digit. With prevailing scenario, the tax collection has become problematic because the low growth does not allow to jack up revenues in massive way.The tax to GDP ratio, which is already on decline, becomes more difficult so it’s challenging for the FBR to materialize collection of Rs5,550 billion in the current fiscal 2019-20 against Rs3,829 billion in the last fiscal year of 2018-19.

Annexation of Kashmirand India’s nuclear threat

During the BJP election campaign, in an elections rally, Narendra Modi asked, in the context of nuclear weapons: “What do we have then? Have we kept our nuclear bomb for Diwali?” – as reported in The Hindu 21 April 2019. He went on to add that India had the capability to launch nuclear attacks from land, air and sea.The aggressive tone towards Pakistan from Narendra Modi’s BJP government continued after Modi’s re-election. The nuclear weapons and Diwali reference was remembered again, when on 16 August India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh declared that India was thinking of reviewing its No First Use Policy (NFU) – which most recognised as a veiled nuclear threat especially if taken with Modi’s April statement. Certainly for Pakistan the message was clear, especially since the nuclear statement followed the Modi government’s illegal annexation of Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK) with the intent of altering the demography in the occupied State. This illegal move was accompanied by a curfew and complete communications blackout that still continues.Of course, the NFU statement has actually been a political ploy of Indian governments since 1999 when they stated their supposed NFU policy. On 4th January, 2003, the government of India issued a press release on: The Cabinet Committee on Security reviews rationalisation of India’s Nuclear doctrine. In this, it stated India would use nuclear weapons against any attack “against India or Indian forces anywhere”, which effectively was a revision of the August 1999 Indian Draft Nuclear Doctrine (DND) and diluted the NFU pledge. Since then, different Indian leaders, civilian and military, have made statements on how India would revise its NFU and the BJP election manifesto of 2014 included this revision commitment. So the Rajnath statement of 16 August was one of many similar statements that had been issued periodically from the Indian government. Which is one reason why Pakistan has never found this NFU claim by India to be credible. The farce of India’s NFU stands exposed. However, the threat of war spiraling into a nuclear exchange has never been as great as it is today. Why? To understand this, we have to see the linkage on how India has been building up the ante against Pakistan militarily as its annexation of IOJK and ethnic cleansing agenda of Muslims was being operationalised.Military ante is usually upped in stages and India has been climbing the escalation ladder for some time now and it has already threatened and done the following from the lowest rung going up the escalation ladder:At the non-kinetic level: Trying to get Pakistan on Financial Action Task Force (FATF) blacklist and thereby seeking to bankrupt Pak economically. Consistently seeking to link the narrative of “terrorism” with the Pakistani state while continuing with state terrorism in IOJK.At the kinetic level: India has been conducting low intensity conflict through acts of terrorism inside Pakistan as the Jadhav confessions and recovered documents have established beyond doubt.India has already begun non-contact warfare with the surgical strike in Balakot but that option ended in complete military failure followed by diplomatic-political failure when Pakistan returned the Indian pilot unconditionally. The limited military response by Pakistan also sent a clear signal to India that Pakistan had the capability to respond militarily at the level of threat initiated by India, at a time and place of its own choosing.India further upped the ante with the use of cluster bombs (contrary to the 1983 Inhumane Weapons Convention to which both Pakistan and India are Parties) and targeting of civilians across the LoC. This has been followed by daily attacks against civilians across the LoC.So India has already moved up the escalation ladder not just by threatening, but by actually carrying out these actions against Pakistan. Within this new escalation ladder, our concern has to be India’s development of the Brahmos missile. Incidentally, till India joined the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR - a Supplier Cartel not an international convention), it restricted its range to 290kms but after joining the MTCR, it increased its range to 1000kms. This is a supersonic missile, so it is highly destabilising given the lack of spatial depth of Pakistan and no real time lag for a quick response unless we place our missiles on alert in advance.Presently, for Pakistan (and for the international community also) the strategic question is: what rung will India climb to next? And what would Pakistan’s options be? To assume Pakistan would continue to be non-belligerent as it was in returning the captured Indian pilot would be a great error in judgment on the part of the international community.Clearly, India’s next rung of kinetic escalation would be some version of the Cold Start Doctrine – either directly into Pakistan or through Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Whatever India claims to the contrary, this doctrine is very much there in Indian strategy and they spent $182bn on the programme between 2004-2015.India has also spent on massive upgrades of its communications network, logistic mechanisms and increased its forward bases – those which were intended for war time are now seen as peace time deployments by India.Judging by India’s actual deployments on the ground, clearly the focus of its military strategy is Pakistan. For instance: 7 of its 9 commands are configured and deployed against Pakistan; 81 % of IAF bases are configured against Pakistan; 7 missile groups have been raised and all are directed against Pakistan.India’s space militarisation programme is going full speed ahead as it seeks to have space based integration of its nuclear Triad. International studies show that India has amassed enough fissile material, aided by the civil nuclear deals it signed with the US and other developed states, in clear contravention of their commitments under Articles I and II of the Non-Proliferation Treaty to make 490-2600 nuclear weapons.Coming back to the Cold Start Doctrine, it is clearly a preemptive doctrine and therefore the Brahmos will play a central role. Earlier, Pakistan’s response to this doctrine was to develop the Nasr short-range missile. Last week, Pakistan successfully tested the night-launch of its SSBM Ghaznavi missile with a 290kms range, sending another military signal to India and the world of 24/7 operational readiness.Unfortunately, the present extremist mindset of the Modi government, which like Hitler’s Nazi regime, is upping the military ante because it is reading signals of appeasement by the international community. After all, just as Europe accepted the Anschluss of Austria and Germany as Hitler annexed Austria and the 1938 Munich Conference accepted the forcible annexation of a part of Czechoslovakia, the Sudetenland, by Hitler, so the international community today is silent on India’s annexation of IOJK, and adopts the same silence vis-à-vis India’s internment camps and actions to render stateless millions of Indian Muslims in Assam. This begs the next question: since India’s surgical strike on Balakot failed and its use of cluster bombs and firings along the LOC have achieved no real purpose, will it risk operationalising Cold Start on a miscalculation of appeasement? Pakistan has clearly stated its intent to respond to each level of the Indian threat. So who will risk the escalation to a nuclear war?The terrible danger of nuclear war has become one rung closer to reality because now we have a prime minister in India who is ruled by a Hindu-Supremacist ideology and a mission of the Nazi concept of Lebensraum (Living Space) for Hindus and who has his finger on the nuclear button. As he put it in April this year: “our nuclear weapons are not for Diwali.”The writer is Minister for Human Rights in GOP.

Matloob breaks course record to take CNS Open lead

KARACHI: For the best part of his career, Lahore’s Matloob Ahmed has remained in the towering shadow of Shabbir Iqbal – the Jahangir Khan of Pakistan golf. But occasionally, the vastly-talented Matloob comes out of it.Saturday was one such day here at the Karachi Golf Club when Matloob produced his career-best performance to break the course record and take a one-shot lead in the 24th UMA-CNS Open Golf Championship.Matloob, who was trailing the trio of Hamza Amin, Talib Hussain and Shabbir Iqbal after the first two rounds of the Rs8.1 million championship, broke the course record of the historic KGC with a sensational round of 10-under par 62.His aggregate of 205 (-11) gave Matloob a slim one-shot lead but the way he is playing that advantage might well prove to be enough for him to win his third CNS Open crown. Previously, the KGC record (63) was held by the duo of professional Waheed Baloch and former national amateur champion Ali Hai. Both are from KGC.“It was just my day,” the 41-year-old told ‘The News’ after making eight birdies and an eagle in his bogey-free third round.“I was hitting well with my driver and my approach shots were almost always falling in the right place on the green,” added Matloob, who eagled the par-5 second hole on the front nine (Red course). He was two on and then comfortably sank a putt from ten feet. That eagle was just the start. He birdied the par-3 third and then had three more birdies on holes 5,7 and 8 to finish the front nine at 31.The floodgates opened for him on the back nine at the par-5 2nd on Blue. He had five consecutive birdies starting from the second hole.“This is one of the most important events on the national calendar and I came well-prepared,” said Matloob, who won the CNS Open in 2001 and 2016.Matloob is hoping to once again produce his A game in order to win the coveted title. He is expecting the toughest resistance from Hamza Amin, who was the outright leader on Friday after carding 67 in the second round. Hamza, son of former national champion Taimur Hassan (206), is tied for the second spot with Talib Hussain after scoring 69 in the third round.“Hamza is playing sensational golf and I believe that he will be a tough man to beat tomorrow,” said Matloob.Matloob’s 62 overshadowed several other impressive performances including that of Islamabad’s Muhammad Tariq who carded eight-under 64 to take the third spot with 207.Islamabad’s Talib Hussain remained in contention with a round of 67 that keeps him just one shot away from the leader. At 209 is Pakistan No. 1 Shabbir Iqbal, who carded 69 in the third round. Cops kidnap, implicate govt official in drug-trafficking case

PESHAWAR: In a horrible incident of police high-handedness in the provincial capital, three cops allegedly kidnapped a government official from the posh Hayatabad locality, kept him hostage for hours and let him go after placing heroin in his car to implicate him in a drug-trafficking case, a source told The News. The incident caused concern among the general public as they were worried the once reformed police force has once again started the old abhorrent tactics of abducting and implicating innocent people in false cases to mint money and settle personal scores. The police had to take notice of the incident after the Institute of Kidney Diseases in Hayatabad, where the victim Habibullah worked as personal assistant to the director, raised the issue. Habibullah had been granted bail by the local court a couple of days after his arrest as the case against him was weak and full of flaws. When Habibullah lodged a complaint with the senior cops, police officials are now saying they have traced the gang involved in the incident and arrested its members, including policemen, a nurse and civilians. The victim told The News that the incident happened on July 25 when he left his rented house in Phase-4 Hayatabad for office in his car at around 8:15 am. “Three armed men in uniform rushed towards my car and introduced themselves as officials of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). They took control of my car, blindfolded me and snatched my cellular phone. They claimed senior CTD officials had directed them to shift me to the head office,” Habibullah told The News. “They were talking to someone on phone constantly. Once they said that they had crossed the Karkhano Phatak. I was taken to a house for some time before I was told it was a misunderstanding and I had been cleared. On the way back, the three men disembarked from the car at some distance one by one and told me to open my eyes after a few minutes,” Habibullah recalled. He added when he opened his eyes he was alone in the car.“I asked a local about the location and he told me I was in Khyber, hardly few hundred meters from the Karkhano checkpost. I reached the checkpost to inform the cops about what had happened to me but they were already waiting for me,” Habibullah said. He maintained that the cops at Karkhano checkpost rushed towards his car, pointed their guns at him, and dragged him out of the vehicle.“I told them I had been kidnapped, but they humiliated me since they were told something else by the three men who had earlier taken me away. They later claimed to have recovered drugs from my car as per the plan,” Habibullah recalled.“I was shocked and wondered as to why all this happened to him,” he added. His photo and details were immediately released to the media and he was shifted to the lock-up after lodging of the case. A large number of his colleagues from the Institute of Kidney Diseases came to the police station and told the cops it was a conspiracy against Habibullah. The police, however, didn’t listen to anyone.Habibullah’s colleagues also appeared in the court during the first hearing. The court granted Habibullah bail after listening to the arguments of his colleagues. “I have lodged a complaint with the police authorities. I explained that my ordeal started when my female colleague Shahida and her husband started threatening me following her suspension by senior officials. The fact is that I draft whatever orders I receive from my seniors. I have nothing to do with suspension or any other action,” Habibullah said. The victim in an application to the top police officials mentioned that apart from Shahida and her husband Luqman, policemen Ihsan, Samandar and Raghib, and two other people Shafiq and Saifur were involved in his kidnapping and placing heroin in his car to lodge a false case against him.“We have lodged a case and arrested all the characters involved in the whole episode. There is no place for scoundrels in the police force,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations, Zahoor Babar Afridi told The News.He admitted that such incidents earn bad name for the image of the force. “I have taken all of them to the task. The working out of the case shows there is no place for criminal elements in our force,” he added.

Held Kashmir still not going India’s way

The Modi Sarkar did not anticipate major internationalisation of the Held Kashmir issue when it removed the Article 370 nor the reaction of the Kashmiri public. The curfew so far has been in place for some 20 days, something the Indian government did not consider when taking the action. It is unprecedented holding millions of people hostage for such a long time. It may continue for unforeseeable future. Then came a major rebuke in the form of a warning by Genocide Watch, a US-based organisation, which has issued an alert in this regard, giving a list of risk factors for a genocide that are early warnings of massacres in IHK. It was massively downplayed by the Indian media and the Modi government. Nevertheless, it was a jolt for the Indian establishment and an eye-opener for the world. Nobody wants a repeat of Rwanda or Srebrenica. The extraordinary long total communications blackout in IHK is also something that the Modi Sarkar did not plan. There has been no internet access, while mobile phone networks, cable and Kashmiri television channels have been blocked. This is unthinkable in today’s modern era that raised fears throughout the world what was really happening in the Valley. It was termed “inconsistent with the fundamental norms of necessity and proportionality” by UN experts. The knee-jerk reaction by Indian ambassador to the UN in his press conference showed India was not prepared for the UNSC consultative meeting that raised the issue after a long time. The reaction and coverage by the international media was shocking for the Indian government. All major US and UK newspapers and magazines besides other major media painted the lockdown and tensions with Pakistan in a negative manner for New Delhi. They highlighted the curfew across the held Jammu and Kashmir, bringing in massive numbers of troops to enforce restrictions on freedom of movement and of peaceful assembly, particularly in the Kashmir Valley, which has upset the Modi Sarkar. Also reported by the international media were night raids on private homes leading to the arrests of young people by Indian security forces. The correct assessment by the international media that India will shun its secularism in future and it was the largest democracy in the name only dismayed the Modi government. Moreover, Trump’s offer of mediation did not sit well with Prime Minister Modi. The Russian and Chinese reactions were also troublesome for New Delhi. As the issue has international and regional ramifications, it is not going to die away. While the Modi Sarkar has certainly appeased the Hindu nationalists that brought it into power for the second term by revoking Article 370, it does not know what to do in the held Valley in the near future. It may try to stage a drama like Pulwama, heat up the LoC, but that will only aggravate things for the Modi government as international perception that South Asia is reaching a nuclear flash point is being reinforced, especially after Indian defence minister’s imprudent remarks.

Pressure mounting on India over Article 370

Pressure is continuously mounting on India over the abrogation of Article 370 in Held Kashmir and there is no denying it. The Indians are in much panic and have started realising that the world will not keep silent on the issue. On August 16, President Trump told Prime Minister Imran Khan that he would speak to Narendra Modi on Kashmir and India-Pakistan tensions. Modi and the Indian establishment was in such panic that it didn’t wait for the call and reached out to the US president itself. Then the United Nations Security Council’s consultative meeting in New York on the “India-Pakistan questions” is not going to go away. It was a major diplomatic victory for Pakistan that the UNSC took up the issue after 50 years, showing the Kashmir issue was not an internal matter and was not dead.According to one Indian diplomat: “Despite the brave face put on it by New Delhi, the fact of the matter is that it couldn’t prevent such a meeting, and that alone becomes a diplomatic setback with likely downstream consequences, especially if the ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir deteriorates and India-Pakistan tensions cascade – and all this when Trump is in some urgency to reach an agreement with the Afghan Taliban.”Then surprisingly Modi is still unwilling to refute President Trump’s claim that he was approached by the Indian prime minister to mediate on Kashmir. This speaks a lot about the pressures the Indian establishment is already facing on the volatile Kashmir issue. The Indian Prime Minister’s Office is taking the usual line on the Trump-Modi phone call: “In the context of the regional situation, the prime minister stated that extreme rhetoric and incitement to anti-India violence by certain leaders in the region was not conducive to peace. He highlighted the importance of creating an environment free from terror and violence and eschewing cross-border terrorism without exception.” The problem is that nobody is listening to Modi Sarkar anymore.MK Bhadrakumar, a former diplomat, has warned the Modi Sarkar: “The roof is not likely to come down if Trump can lend a hand to tamp down tensions and nudge the Indian and Pakistani leaders to talk. The point is, the Kashmir issue has been internationalized, and if the downhill slide in India-Pakistan relations continues, UN intervention becomes all but certain, and it may turn out to be intrusive. Of course, that doesn’t mean that India will buckle under pressure, but attrition is bound to set in over time, and statesmanship lies in anticipating events and assessing whether on balance such developments would be to India’s advantage.”There have been smart diplomatic moves by Pakistan on Kashmir and the trend should continue.

Kashmiri villagers tell how Indian army tortured them

SRINAGAR: Villagers living in Indian Held Kashmir (IHK) say that Indian army officer have beaten them with sticks, given them electric shocks, and filled their mouths with mud when they screamed, according to a BBC report from the Valley, international media reported on Friday. Two unnamed brothers living in a village known to be a hub of freedom fighters told the BBC's Sameer Hashmi that they were woken up and gathered alongside nearly a dozen other men from their village, and beaten up even as they protested their innocence. Here's what one of them told the BBC:"They beat us up. We were asking them: 'What have we done? You can ask the villagers if we are lying, if we have done anything wrong?' But they didn't want to hear anything, they didn't say anything, they just kept beating us."They beat every part of my body. They kicked us, beat us with sticks, gave us electric shocks, beat us with cables. They hit us on the back of the legs. When we fainted they gave us electric shocks to bring us back. When they hit us with sticks and we screamed, they sealed our mouth with mud.One of the men then said that they asked the soldiers to: "Just shoot us.""I was asking Allah [God] to take me, because the torture was unbearable," he continued. The BBC did not name the men, noting that they declined to reveal their identities for fear of persecution. It also did not name the six villages it visited, but said they were in southern Kashmir and were known hubs for anti-India resistance. Many people in the IHK, which is mostly Muslim, either want total independence or unity with Pakistan. The Indian army has denied all the allegations in the article, telling the BBC that they are "baseless and unsubstantiated," and there have been "no injuries or casualties due to countermeasures undertaken by the army."Col. Aman Anand also told the BBC that "these allegations are likely to have been motivated by inimical elements." The High Commission of India in London has not yet responded to Business Insider's request for comment. Here are details of the other allegations reported by the BBC: · One man said he was pushed to the ground and beaten with "cables, guns, sticks, and probably iron rods," by 15 to 16 soldiers, and that they "pulled my beard so hard that I felt like my teeth would fall out."· A man whose brother had joined the Hizbul Mujahideen had his hands and legs tied, was hung upside down, and beaten "very badly for more than two hours."· Another man said Indian security forces ordered him to take off his glasses, clothes, and shoes, and proceeded to beat him "mercilessly with rods and sticks" for almost two hours when he said he didn't know and couldn't name any anti-India protesters in his village.· "Whenever I fell unconscious, they gave me shocks to revive [me]," the man said. These allegations come two weeks after a group of Indian economists and activists reported that Kashmiri security forces dragged hundreds of boys out of their homes in midnight raids, and molested women and girls during them. The IHK — already one of the most highly-militarised areas in the world — has seen tens of thousands more Indian soldiers sent into the region since early August, as the Indian government altered its constitution to revoke the political autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir state. India has detained some 3,000 people, from activists to local politicians, in what authorities say are pre-emptive and designed to maintain regional stability.India has also imposed a state-wide communications blackout on the region — a common strategy to stop people from organising protests or spreading unflattering news about India.Internet and phone lines remain cut, and soldiers continue to seal off large chunks of roads in the IHK. Local journalists are unable to report the news. The website of Greater Kashmir, a large English-language newspaper in the region, has not been updated since August 5.Though Indian authorities have cut communication lines, forcibly disappeared people, and carried out mass arrests in the past, the current militarisation is unprecedented, regional experts told Insider's Ellen Ioanes. They warned that the current environment could lead to a full-scale insurgency.Pakistan has cut off all trade and rail links to India over the Kashmir crisis, and vowed to protest to the United Nations. Its prime minister, Imran Khan, has repeatedly likened India's revoking Kashmir's autonomy to Nazi ideology.

"We want the safeguarding of human rights of people of Occupied Kashmir where a complete communication blackout has been put in place. We ask the British government to raise its voice over the issue and play its role in this regard. Apart from British government, we ask [the] United Nations, if they want to be fit for purpose then they will have to raise their voice in support of Kashmir issue."Jawad Malik pointed out that British parliamentary delegation visited the Line of Control (LoC) and also registered their protest besides playing a pivotal role in highlighting the Kashmir issue and people of Kashmir and Pakistan were grateful to them."Even Prime Minister Imran Khan has given the same directives as he has become an ambassador of the Kashmir issue and has been highlighting the issue at every fora. It is our moral duty to play our part in this regard as well," he added.During meetings, Stephen Timms also expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in the Indian-held Kashmir saying India was violating human rights in the territory and it was important that international observers were accorded access to the area in order to gauge the level of human rights abuses. He hoped the world would take notice of the worsening situation before it deteriorates into anything serious between the two nuclear-armed neigbours. It merits mentioning that the current visit by the British parliamentary delegation was not the first one organised by Jawad Malik. Three leading British parliamentarians including the former cabinet minister and Conservative Party chairperson Saeeda Warsi, and Labour MPs Naz Shah and Faisal Rashid, had visited Pakistan in March as well on Malik's invite to discuss ways and means to enhance bilateral trade and boost economic ties between Britain and Pakistan.

Following the Indian act, the federal government succeeded in the convening of the UN Security Council meeting and raising the Kashmir issue on international forums."Therefore, this august House recommends to the federal government to further intensify efforts for fighting the Kashmir issue in the United Nations, Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), besides other regional and world forums, to expose Indian violations of human rights and the UN charter."Earlier, Speaker Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani announced that like other people of the country the members of the provincial assembly would show solidarity with the Kashmiri people by standing on the Khyber Road for half an hour.He said the members led by parliamentary leaders of all political parties in the House would leave the Assembly Hall at 11:50 am to reach Khyber Road where they will stand from 12 noon to 12:30 pm to express solidarity with the people of Indian-occupied Kashmir who are facing Indian security forces' atrocities. He asked all the members to ensure their participation in the event.
