Increase in scholarship age of medical teachers demanded

KARACHI: Teachers of medical universities are facing a lot of hardships in getting scholarships of foreign countries for higher education (MPhil and PhD) under the Higher Education Commission (HEC). As the government has set the age of scholarship at 40 years, majority of medical universities' teachers fail to get scholarship. Due to the said age factor, teachers of general and engineering universities get full benefit of this.While talking to The News, an Assistant Professor of Jinnah Sindh Medical University said she tried time and again for scholarship on website but the HEC scholarship form rejected her attempt as she was above 40 years.A lecturer of the Bolan Medical College said his college’s name was not mentioned in the scholarship form. However, he attempted for the scholarship but as he was 15 days above 40 years, the scholarship form did not accept his case.In his comment, Dr Tariq Rafi, Vice Chancellor of Sindh Medical University and a member of PMDC, said medical universities' teachers dot not get any benefit from the HEC scholarship because of age factor. He said the scholarship age for medical universities' teachers should be set at 45 years. He said to solve the issues of medical universities, it is necessary to appoint a Medical Director as Adviser Director General in HEC.Dean of Medicine Dr Nargis Anjum of Karachi University said the period of medical education is already more than general education and then they have to go through house job and practice, thus, medical universities' teachers age for scholarship be set at 42 years.Wasim Hashmi, Adviser Human Resource Development, Higher Education Commission, said 40 years age is enough for medical teachers’ scholarship. He said the age for scholarship was set by the government, therefore, they will not give any relief in this respect.
