Islamabad: The government, in addition to Anti-Theft Task Force has constituted independent monitoring teams with mandate to visit Power Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and highlight any irregularities or corrupt practices.Strict actions are being taken based on evidence collected by the team. Sources at Energy (Power Division) while highlighting steps taken to control electricity theft in the country on Sunday said special campaign to curb electricity theft has been launched in October last year in all distribution companies.Chief Ministers of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have constituted task forces for control of electricity theft. The respective task force is headed by Secretary Energy of the province and includes Chief Executive Officer (CEOs) of concerned power distribution companies and relevant Deputy Commissioner and District Police Officer.The sources said full support of administration and police has restored morale and enthusiasm of DISCOs employees translating in saving/earning of sizeable financial gain since launch of the campaign. Giving further details, the sources said during 2015-16, 1602 cases of electricity theft were detected and amount charged was Rs18.083 billion, in 2016-17, 2294 units were detected and amount charged was 24.921 billion while during 2017-18 the authorities concerned detected 3070 units and amount charged was 31.453 billion.With these efforts, line losses of DISCOs are showing a decreasing trend and recovery from consumers has also improved. The sources said task force, district management committees and enforcement committees are in continuous communication with each other through a portal. Disciplinary actions are being initiated against defaulting consumers and DISCO employees involved in theft while First Information Reports (FIRs) are also lodged against electricity stealers.
