KARACHI: The Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi has said we owe it to ourselves and to our children, to preserve the environment which is a blessing of Allah (SWT).The Chief of Naval Staff said this in his message at the opening of the Pakistan Navy’s spring plantation campaign.Admiral Abbasi said all the units of Pakistan Navy shall plant thousands of saplings as our contribution towards ‘Greener Pakistan’ during this campaign. He also urged all the countrymen to join hands with Pakistan Navy in this noble cause and commit to plant at least one tree each, to help provide clean and better environment. “Let us strive together to make this tree plantation campaign a success and preserve the nature for our future generations, “he said. The Spring Tree Plantation Campaign is an opportunity to strengthen our link with nature. Afforestation is vital for our socio-economic development and a sustainable ecosystem. For years, besides contributing towards food, fiber resources and livelihood, trees have been instrumental in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and natural disasters. Despite the efforts to promote a greener world, deforestation mainly due to over population, urbanization, agricultural expansion and industrialization to name a few, has severely damaged the environment. It is, therefore, imperative to curb deforestation through institutionalized measures. The tree plantation drive has started showing its positive impact. According to Pakistan Metrological Departments, in Jan and Feb 2019, winter rainfall was observed above normal as compared to the average of last 20 years during the same period. To contribute to the healthy environment and in line with the government’s initiative of ‘Plant for Pakistan’, Pakistan Navy has planted four million mangroves in the coastal belt and 700,000 trees at the PN units and setups spread across Pakistan in the last three years.
