MULTAN: A large number of doctors Monday observed complete strike and staged a demonstration against murder attempt on Nishtar Medical University (NMU) pro-vice chancellor, which injured him critically. The doctors closed the out-patient department door in protest. Pakistan Medical Association had appealed for the strike. The protesters demanded including Terrorism Sections in the FIR and immediate approval of doctors’ security bill which is pending with the Punjab Assembly. They warned of extending protest drive across the province if their demands are not met. Earlier, an accused Sajid Qureshi attacked NMU pro-vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ahmed Ijaz Masud when he was visiting the Lohari Gate on Saturday last. Police arrested the accused who gave his statement before the police that he shot at the doctor because Dr Masud mishandled his wife’s case just to make money but she could not survive and died. Dr Masud received two bullets in his legs which were operated later at the Nishtar Hospital.PMA president Prof Dr Masoodur Rauf Hiraj rejected the accused’s allegations, alleging he is just saving his face. He said the draft of the doctors’ security bill had been finalised six months ago but the government was reluctant to promulgate it in the province. He said the doctors were unable to perform in a state of terror. He warned that if the situation continues then all doctors will stop performing duties at the public hospitals in all cities.Prof Dr Mehnaz Khakwani said that murder attempt on Dr Masud indicates the decline of the society. She said no doctor wants to harm his patient rather tries his best to work for his/her recovery. She said the present wave of violence against doctors was alarming and the government should ensure their protection.
