Healthy diet, active lifestyle stressed to overcome malnutrition

FAISALABAD: The promotion of traditional food, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and eastern lifestyle are essential to fight malnutrition in the country as it has affected more than 45 per cent of the population.Addressing the inaugural session of the two-day seminar titled ‘sensitisation seminar on nutrition for media, academia and students’ at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, varsity’s Vice-Chancellor Dr Zafar Iqbal showed his concern that the students did not take breakfast which was increasing malnutrition in the society.“We should put emphasis on our children to consume homemade dishes full of energy.” He urged the people to use a balanced diet and adopt physical activities in their daily lives and offer prayer five times a day. He said that excessive eating also leads to malnutrition.UAF Faculty of Food Nutrition and Home Sciences Dean Dr Masood Sadiq Butt said malnutrition issue was worsening due to changing lifestyle. He said that the common use of junk food was not good for health. NIFSAT director-general Dr Tahir Zahoor said that education about balanced food at school level would help overcome the issue. He said that malnutrition had emerged as the biggest problem than the energy crisis.Dr Irfan Ullah said that vitamin-D deficiency stands high with 60 per cent ratio, vitamin-A with 45 per cent, maternal anaemia at 49 per cent and child stunting stands at 43 per cent in the country.
