‘No compromise on timely completion of BRT project’

PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Mahmood Khan has said the provincial government will not compromise on the timely completion of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project in Peshawar.This he said while presiding over a meeting to discuss the update on the project, said an official handout. Additional Chief Secretary Shehzad Bangash, Peshawar Commissioner Amjad Ali, Planning & Development Department Secretary, Shahab Ali Shah, Transport Secretary Kamran Khan, Peshawar Development Authority director general, Capital City Police Officer of Peshawar Qazi Jamil and others attended the meeting.The officials briefed the chief minister about the pace of work and the update on the BRT. Small projects connected to the BRT were discussed as well. The chief minister said both sides of the BRT must be cleared for traffic and all hurdles removed as that was the appropriate approach to overcome the traffic congestion issue in the Peshawar city.He said the flow of traffic in the Peshawar city should not be affected by the ongoing construction work on the BRT. Mahmood Khan directed that most of the construction work on the BRT should be carried out at night so as to give relief to the people from traffic in the daytime.Meanwhile, the chief minister directed for constitution of a committee to be headed by Minister for Information Shaukat Yousafzai that would suggest an alternative to the polythene bags. The other members of the committee will include Commissioner, CCPO and representatives of Water Sanitation Services Peshawar, business community and Environment Department.The chief minister said the use of polythene bags polluted and affected our agriculture sector, irrigation, sewerage system and also the drinking water supply arrangement to a great extent. He called for ensuring the use of biodegradable bags which will not only keep the environment clean but would also protect the people from different diseases.The chief minister said awareness campaigns would be carried out through the media so as to make the business community and the general public aware of the harms and complication of polythene bags.
