‘Enough water reservoirs to meet capital’s summer requirement’

Islamabad: Islamabad’s residents would get rid from water crises as there are enough water reservoirs in Simly and Khanpur dam to meet the summer requirement of the federal capital.Director Water Supply Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) Nasir Jamil But on Wednesday said water level in Simly Dam is now 2,298 MSL while Khanpur Dam is at its full level 1,985 MSL. He further informed that MCI Water Directorate is receiving 24 million galloons per day from Simly dam.He said the MCI has started the maintenance of damaged supply lines which would be completed with in 15 days and after its completion, directorate will get 34 million gallons water per day from Simly Dam.He said water theft and wastage are main issues for water scarcity and MCI is taking concrete steps to overcome them and in this regard 400 illegal water connections have been disconnected from the main supply line of Simly Dam.He said 50 per cent water is being wasted due to old and poor supply lines, adding that MCI needed Rs2 billions for upgrading, maintenance and repairing of main supply lines as well as purchasing of 15 more water tankers. He said the corporation was taking short and long-term steps for smooth water supply in federal capital.Director Water Supply, Metropolitan Corporation of Islamabad said the Corporation has requested the residents to avoid wasting water and also served notices to car wash centres for recycling of water.To a question, he said Ghazi Barotha Project is a part of vision 2050 for the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. He said it was spread over three phases, in the first phase, the twin cities would be provided with 200 million gallons of water a day by laying a 60-kilometre-long, 80 inch-wide pipeline from the Tarbela dam at Ghazi Barotha to a water treatment plant at Sangjiani in Islamabad. In the second phase, additional 200 millions of gallons of water would be received on a daily basis while in the third phase, 255 million gallons of water will be received, he added.Once complete, the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi would be supplied with a total of 650 million gallons of water a day, Director Water Supply, Metropolitan Corporation of Islamabad added.
