Ex-DIG handed over to NAB in graft cases

LAHORE: Federal Investigation Agency on Monday handed over custody of former DIG Gilgit-Baltistan Junaid Arshad, accused of uploading obscene images of his former wife on social media, to National Accountability Bureau to interrogate him in corruption cases against him.Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had arrested most wanted former DIG Junaid Arshad in March. It has learnt that the FIA has completed its investigation after which he was handed over to the NAB where he is facing probe related to assets beyond means. The sources in the bureau informed that the former DIG Gilgit-Baltistan during his posting 2002-2008 acquired assets worth hundreds of millions. As per initial investigations, Junaid owns expensive plots in Islamabad and other areas.The NAB will produce the accused today (Tuesday) before an accountability court for obtaining his physical remand. President Arif Alvi had sacked Junaid Arshad in January on allegations of harassing his former wife on social media. A fine of Rs1 million was also imposed on him. The harassment complaint was filed by Ayesha Subhani, former wife of Junaid, in September 2018. She stated in her complaint that her former husband had posted immoral photographs of her on social media with the intent to defame her.Ayesha had also lodged an FIR against Junaid with the FIA. The accused remained at large for a long time. Even the FIA had announced Rs500,000 reward for the person assisting in arrest of Junaid.Moreover, Junaid is not the only high profile police officer facing arrest and inquiry before the NAB over corruption charges. The NAB is probing four former DPOs of Gujrat, including SP Kamran Mumtaz, SSP Rai Ijaz, SSP Sohail Zafar Chattha and Rai Zameer for their alleged involvement in police funds embezzlement. As per NAB claims, all four former DPOs during their tenure in Gujrat had embezzled billions under different heads of procurement, including petrol, uniforms, martyr funds, fake vouchers, pensions and alleged ghost employments.Top police officials, including Rai Ijaz and Kamran Mumtaz were arrested by the NAB and are now on judicial remand. NAB had arrested SP Kamran Mumtaz after he had returned from Australia.The Bureau has accused him of embezzling Rs550 million under different heads, including petrol bills, allowances and martyrs funds of the police department during his posting as Gujrat DPO (2015-16). The NAB has accused SSP Rai Ijaz of causing a loss of Rs700 million to the exchequer through alleged misappropriation of police funds during his posting as Gujrat DPO. According to NAB, Ijaz spent Rs1.3 billion funds in eight months and allegedly misappropriated millions of rupees.
