ISLAMABAD: The Senate session summoned for April 15 will now be held on April 25 after the National Assembly session, scheduled to commence from April 12 was postponed a day earlier.A notified issued on Friday says in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 54 of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the President has been pleased to summon the Senate to meet in the Parliament building on Thursday, April 25 at 3:00pm instead of Monday, April 12 at 3:00pm. The 288th Senate session summoned for April 15 was the first session of the new parliamentary year. The last session of the previous parliamentary year commenced on February 25 and prorogued on March 08.The summoned sessions of the Senate and the National Assembly, have been ‘postponed’ amid reports that the government intends to promulgate an ordinance to launch an amnesty scheme. While briefing media persons after the Federal Cabinet meeting held on April 09, Information and Broadcasting Minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain had said that Law Minister Farogh Naseem will decide on whether to introduce the amnesty scheme through a money bill or a presidential ordinance. However, after ‘extending’ the date of sessions of the two Houses of the Parliament, it has become quite obvious that a presidential ordinance is to be promulgated; the government is awaiting return of Finance Minister Asad Umar to do the needful. As regards the new parliamentary year, as per the calendar, prepared by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and duly approved by Prime Minister Imran Khan, a total of nine regular sessions are to be conducted, consisting of 115 days.Meanwhile, Pakistan People’s Party has moved the Senate for discussion in the House on a recent statement by Prime Minister Imran Khan regarding his clear preference of incumbent Prime Minister of India as a better choice for Pakistan if re-elected.“On the eve of a general election in India, the Prime Minister of Pakistan has stated a clear preference for incumbent Premier of India, Narendra Modi, as a better choice for Pakistan if reelected. This preference for a candidate in another country’s elections is bother shocking and unprecedented on many counts,” said PPP Vice-President Senator Sherry Rehman, in an adjournment motion, filed in the Senate Secretariat. She noted in the motion that after the Pulwama attack episode and Modi government’s record on state terrorism in Kashmir, it is a matter of grave concern that a sitting Prime Minister has declared for the candidate, who endorses the systematic oppression of the Muslims as well as demonization of Pakistan as a matter of policy record .“The House business should be adjourned to discuss this matter of urgent public importance,” she said.
