Rawalpindi: Thousands of patients requiring diagnostic and treatment facilities at outpatient departments (OPD) took a sigh of relief as finally, after 11 days of strike, the OPDs at the public sector hospitals in the province including the three allied hospitals in town got operational on Monday. The strike has been called off for the time being as the young doctors and paramedics have given one-week time to the government to work out solution for their reservations upon implementation of Medical Teaching Institutions (MTI) Reforms Act in public sector hospitals of the province.The young doctors, paramedics and nurses after forming a grand health alliance went on strike at OPDs in all public sector hospitals of the Punjab province on May 2 on the call of Young Doctors Association (YDA) Punjab as a protest against the government’s plan of implementing Medical Teaching Institutions Reforms Act.The grand health alliance rejected the constitution of a committee formed by the government of Punjab on May 7 to deliberate on the proposed MTI Reforms Act, 2019 after which the Specialised Healthcare & Medical Edu Dept constituted another committee the same day with which the striking doctors and paramedics have agreed to enter a discussion.The committee comprising Special Secretary SHC & ME Department, vice chancellors of King Edward Medical University and Fatima Jinnah Medical University Lahore, Principal Services Institute of Medical Sciences Lahore, Professor of Surgery at KEMU/Mayo Hospital, Lahore, two representatives of Pakistan Medical Association, three representatives of Young Doctors Association, two representatives of nurses association and three representatives of Paramedics Association has started deliberation on the proposed MTI Reforms Act.The YDA has asked the government to put recommendations of the committee before the standing committee in the provincial assembly for discussion and reservations of doctors and paramedics about implementation of MTI Act should be addressed through assembly’s resolution, said YDA President at Benazir Bhutto Hospital Dr. Rana Azeem while talking to ‘The News’ on Monday.He said the YDA has called off strike till Saturday and would decide future course of action in the light of output of the committee. The OPDs at the allied hospitals in town including Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Holy Family Hospital and District Headquarters Hospital got fully operational on Monday though the influx of patients at the OPDs was not too heavy because of the strike observed for 11 days.
