PPP slams MQM for supporting Article 149 for Karachi

KARACHI: The Pakistan People's Party, Sindh has said the educated people of Karachi know that Muttahida Quami Movement’s support to the proposal for imposing Article 149 (4) of the Constitution in the city is driven by its agenda to do politics of division in the province. The General Secretary PPP Sindh, Waqar Mehdi, stated this on Thursday while expressing his reaction over the stance of Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar in favour of the proposed imposition of Article 149 (4) in the city to enable the federal government to take drastic steps to overcome the civic issues of Karachi. The PPP leader said whether it is the London-based faction or the MQM-Pakistan, both have never supported the people of Karachi genuinely and did nothing concrete for the welfare and development of people of the city. He said Sindh government gave Rs 500 million to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and Rs 440 million to the district municipal corporations for de-silting of storm water drains.“The mayor is under obligation to explain how Rs 940 million were spent by the mayor and DMC chairmen belonging to MQM and which storm water drains were cleaned,” he said. “The answer to this question lies in the claim of a PTI federal minister, who said he cleared the storm water drains through donations,” said the PPP Sindh leader. The PPP leader said the MQM and PTI should first explain as to who cleared the storm water drains and who pocketed the public money. He said the Peoples Party and its Sindh government would never be frightened by such uncalled for tactics by the federal government. He termed the federal government actions as being similar to the ones used by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to annex the occupied Kashmir.Meanwhile, Sindh Agriculture Minister Mohammad Ismail Rahoo said the statement of Federal Law Minister Farogh Naseem is part of the conspiracy being hatched to break Sindh as it was a plan against the unity of the country. He said such a step would have serious repercussions against country's integrity. He advised the federal law minister to play his due role for amending the Constitution to protect provincial quota in the government jobs. The minister said the law minister instead is posing as an obstruction to the reservation of provincial quota in jobs related to federal institutions. In another reaction, Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Sheikh said a wrong interpretation of the Constitution would lead to unrest in the province and the prime minister should duly consider repercussions of such a move. He said the federation should not interfere with the problems of the province. He said a conspiracy was being implemented to weaken the PPP’s rule in Sindh.
