LAHORE: The Air Quality Index of US Embassy in Lahore for 2.5 micron particulate matter reached 245 making it very unhealthy for the residents of Lahore.The level of smog was very high on Friday morning but in evening scattered rain accompanied with westerly winds washed away major chunk of smog from the sky of provincial capital. However, cloudy weather prevailed in the night and the Met office predicted more rains during the next 24 hours, which if occurred will end the smog.Meanwhile, a large number of private schools defying the Punjab government’s order kept their campuses open across the provincial metropolis in smog caused by poor air quality on Friday.Similarly, private academies and tuition centres remained open on the plea that the order did not apply on such institutes. It is pertinent to mention that the government, through its School Education Department, had announced the closure of all public and private schools in three districts, including Lahore, Faisalabad and Gujranwala on Friday. However, in almost every locality of the provincial metropolis a good number of private schools were seen functioning as per routine. Similarly, there were reports of schools not following the order in Faisalabad and Gujranwala Districts.Dozens of private schools in Samanabad, Harbanspura, Johar Town, Ferozepur Road, Islampura, Nisbat Road, Ravi Road and other areas, including almost all campuses of Iqra Rauzatul Atfal Trust Schools and Moonlight School etc remained open while campuses of Unique and other educational institutions that operate as academies also remained open on Friday.Parents of the students have demanded the government take notice of the defiance by the private schools and ensure that next time any notification should also cover private academies and tuition centres. “Unlike schools, such institutes work till late night and pretend the government’s notifications do not apply on them as these are not categorised as schools,” said Faisal, one of the aggrieved parents.
