Sindh govt demands Centre to help eliminate locust swarms

SUKKUR: The PPP-led Sindh government has demanded at least three helicopters, 32 spraying vehicles and pesticides from the federal government to control the locust swarms attack in various parts of Sindh, including Larkana, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad and Sukkur Divisions.Reports said for the last five months, locust swarms were attacking fresh crops, including wheat, sugarcane, cotton and others, especially in the above regions that left a disastrous impact on agri-related economy. The growers are passing through the hardest period of their business as the locust attacks had destroyed their standing crops.Sindh Minister for Agriculture, Ismail Rahu, said his government earlier requested the federal government to write off agricultural loans of growers in the region due to drought. It was unfortunate that the Centre did not pay attention towards the betterment of growers and the recent locust attack had bankrupted them, he added.Ismail Rahu said eliminating locust swarms from the riverine areas was the responsibility of the federal government but it seemed to be paying no attention to growers’ miseries. He said he had written a letter to the federal government to provide at least three helicopters and 32 spray vehicles, pesticides and other medicines to eliminate the menace.Director Sindh Agriculture, Rasool Bakhsh Junaijo said the locust swarms attacked the crops in Sindh, adding that it was the responsibility of the Plant Protection Department of the federal government. He further said the Sindh government had employed all resources to curb the locust menace, but to eliminate swarms there needed aerial spray.
