SIALKOT: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Chairman Air Marshal Arshad Malik has said that restoration of the past glory of the national flag carrier is his top priority.Talking to industrialists and exporters at the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) here on Monday, he said that during the first year of his tenure as the PIA chairman, he had strictly followed merit in every department and had successfully minimised monthly debt. He said that unlike other international airlines, the PIA had 12 to 13 years old planes and he was sincerely trying to serve the nation with limited resources. He opined that the PIA would soon achieve new milestones of successes with the help and cooperation of the people of the country.He stressed the local business community to prefer the PIA to foreign airlines and use it for the co-branding purpose to boost it financially. He highly praised the Sialkot-based industrialists and exporters for their great contribution in earning valuable foreign exchange worth more than $2 billion for the national exchequer. He said that Sialkot was given special priority while rationalising new routes by the PIA. He said all the rightful demands of the Sialkot-based businessmen would soon be fulfilled and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) would be signed in the next two weeks in this regard.Speaking on the occasion, SCCI president Malik Muhammad Ashraf demanded more direct flights of the PIA to the European countries. He also demanded launching of direct flights of the PIA or via Frankfurt (Germany) to the Scandinavian countries. He opined that such steps would greatly benefit the industry and exports. He also sought help and support from the PIA chairman for the construction of two-way Sialkot-Kartarpur Road.Head of PIA Security and Vigilance Air Commodore Shahid Qadir, SCCI senior vice-president Khurram Azeem Khan, SCCI vice-president Jalil Aslam were present on the occasion.
