Students visit Kalash to witness Chamos festival

MINGORA: On the directives of General Officer Commanding (GOC) Malakand Division Major General Ijaz Mirza, students of various universities and colleges of Malakand Division were facilitated during their visit to Kalash area of Chitral district where they witnessed Chamos festival.On arrival to Chitral, Commandant Chitral Scouts welcomed students from the University of Swat, University of Malakand, and Saidu Medical College, Swat. The students were then taken to the scenic Kalash Valley of the Chitral district.Major General Ijaz Mirza also reached Kalash to witness the festival. Talking to students, Major General Ijaz Mirza said that after the restoration of peace in the region, Pakistan Army was working to promote peace and tourism in the area.“Students are the future of Pakistan. Only through collective efforts, we can succeed to include Pakistan in the list of prosperous and developed nations," he said, adding that education was vital for the development of Pakistan. The students enjoyed Kalasha music and dance.They said that the visit provided them with knowledge about the unique culture of Kalasha people. They thanked GOC Major General Ijaz Mirza for arranging a wonderful trip to the scenic valley.Kalash valley is an ancient valley in Chitral where the people celebrate different festivals including Chamos festival. This is a winter festival celebrated to welcome the New Year. The entire population remains indoors. It is celebrated by feasting, drinking and merrymaking.
