Lawyers demand reversal of NJPMC decision

LAHORE: All Pakistan lawyers’ convention has unanimously demanded reversal of the decision of National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) that declared the petitions under Section 22A and 22B of the CrPC (registration of FIRs) would not be entertained directly by courts, demanding its immediate reversal.The Lahore High Court Bar Association organised an all Pakistan Lawyers’ convention on Tuesday. Representatives of different bar associations & councils from all over the Pakistan attended the convention to record their protest against, what they said an attempt to snatch their livelihood.The convention demanded restoration of previous practice so as to entertain petitions under Sections 22A and 22B of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), the resolution said.Terming NJPMC’s decision an economic murder of the lawyer community, the convention expressed serious reservation over conclusion of murder trials in model courts in four days, apprehending that it would amount to murder of justice.Issuance of succession certificate by courts is regulated by a special law and the same powers could not be given to National Database Regulatory Authority (NADRA), it resolved.A committee headed by Pakistan Bar Council vice-chairman would call on the Chief Justice of Pakistan as per their scheduled meeting and if the issue was not resolved that the lawyers throughout the country would go on strike on April 4.They demanded an amendment to the article 175-A of the Constitution to make the procedure regarding judges’ appointment transparent, enabling the equal representation of parliament, judges and lawyers. The lawyers said the Lahore High Court Bar Association would hold a meeting with political parties to devise a strategy on the issue of judges’ appointment.They also urged the Supreme Judicial Council to decide all pending case against judges on priority basis.All Pakistan Lawyers’ Convention would be held at every provincial capital and the next of such event would take place in Karachi, it was announced.
