Water situation worsening in Pakistan: Wapda chief

LAHORE: Wapda Chairman Lt-Gen (Retd) Muzammil Hussain has said people in Pakistan have been bearing the brunt of water and energy issues, which require urgent need of the people who are at the helm of the affairs. In his inaugural address at a function of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Pakistan, he said though the power situation in the country had improved, yet the water situation was getting worse with each passing day. “The energy crisis being faced by the country has eroded growth, reduced the GDP and also led to loss of jobs. We must strive for earliest solutions,” he added.“Since August 2016, Wapda engineers have been working wonders, as the top management applied the principle of ‘right man for right job’ in the organisation. The long delayed mega hydropower projects – 969 MW-Neelum Jhelum, 1410 MW-Tarbela 4th Extension and 108 MW-Golen Gol – have been completed to add 2,487MW low-cost hydel electricity to the national grid.In addition, Kachhi Canal – a dream project for development of once terrorist-hit province of Balochistan – has also been completed to irrigate 72,000 acres of barren land in far flung area of Dera Bugti district,” he added.
