LAHORE: A writ petition has been filed in Lahore High Court against any move to change the name of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), a poverty alleviation programme named after slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.A citizen, Umar Hayat, through his counsel Khawar Mehmood Khatana, moved the petition, saying the BISP was launched in year 2010 by the then PPP-led government after proper legislation. The former government made changes in the BISP due to political reasons as it removed BB picture from the programme card, but the incumbent government now intends to change the name of the income support programme, the petitioner says. The petitioner pleads that under the law name of BISP cannot be changed unless parliament makes an amendment to the law. The petitioner seeks court’s order to restrain the government from changing the name of the BISP. A controversy was triggered recently after Prime Minister Imran Khan and some leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf hinted at changing the name of BISP what they alleged the PPP was misusing the poverty alleviation project for political benefit. Chairperson, BISP, Dr Sania Nishtar later clarified that BISP is the name of an Act and an institution and there is no formal discussion on the name change of the programme.
