MULTAN: The Central Cotton Research Institute on Monday organised an awareness walk on ‘Rescue economy, grow cotton’ to motivate farmers to grow cotton on maximum area to meet the set targets.The walk was led by CCRI Director Dr Zahid Mehmood which started from the Multan Press Club and culminated at Chowk Nawan Sher. The participants were carrying banners and placards having slogans to motivate cotton growers to promote cotton sowing and bringing more area under its cultivation.The purpose of the walk was to promote maximum cultivation of cotton and making it more profitable by using modern production technology to achieve the target of 15 million bales assigned by Prime Minister Imran Khan to all the cotton stakeholders. Speaking on the occasion, CCRI Director Dr Zahid Mehmood said that increased cotton cultivation would rescue the economy from crisis.He said that the CCRI was not only developing virus resistant varieties but also playing a key role in mass awareness for growing cotton to boost the economy. Dr Zahid Mehmood said that the CCRI had launched a countrywide training programme for cotton growers to enhance its cultivation. The CCRI had introduced free laboratory tests of cotton seeds in all four provinces to promote cotton cultivation, he told. The CCRI had already introduced Tele Cotton Mobile Text Message Service for growers, he added.The CCRI was imparting better farming techniques to the cotton growers, he informed. Dr Zahid Mehmood said that any farmer could get himself registered with the CCRI mobile application. He said that the CCRI was holding training sessions for the farmers and disseminating useful information in collaboration with different NGOs, farmers associations and the Punjab Agriculture Department (Extension). The CCRI had planned to arrange seminars, impart training and provide information to the cotton growers during the cotton season, he concluded.
