PESHAWAR: The religious scholars of the province have launched a campaign to help the government and police go after drugs, particularly “ice” (methamphetamine).A number of religious scholars from across the province attended a meeting with Capital City Police Officer Qazi Jamilur Rehman last week and assured support to police against drugs. The clerics were asked by the police bosses to create awareness among the public about the negative effects of the consumption of drugs and urge the parents to take care of their children in case they found them addicted to hashish, heroin or ice. “The session was the first of its kind with ulema. We briefed them about what police have already done against the drugs to purge the society of the menace,” the CCPO told The News.He added that police is cutting the supply line but the society, especially religious scholars and elders should help police in collective efforts to end its demand. “Police alone cannot finish the demand for the drugs in the society. The whole society, including ulema and teachers, should play their role to end the demand for the drugs,” said Qazi Jamil.He added the religious scholars were now doing a great job in sensitizing the parents and other people during sermons and other sessions. Apart from Peshawar, police in a number of other districts have accelerated measures to go after the dealers and smugglers.On the directives of the Inspector General of Police Mohammad Naeem Khan recently, the police in every district are conducting raids and creating awareness among the public about ice and other drugs.There are a number of complaints about the increase in use of the synthetic drug that is called ice, party drug, crystal meth or methamphetamine in different places. Not only in Peshawar, the addicts of ice alarming increased in other parts of the province and the country. Police have launched an ‘Ice-Free Peshawar’ campaign and constituted special teams in all the divisions under the respective SP to go after the smugglers and dealers in their areas.Besides, the provincial government has been requested to pursue the passage of an act from the assembly against the life-threatening drug to be able to impose stricter punishments for the users and the sellers.The campaign is gradually gaining strength and has already spread to other districts with people from different walks of life now supporting it and creating awareness among the people about the harms of drugs.“We are identifying ice manufacturers sellers, distributes and peddlers at the police station level with updated lists. Besides, we are doing categorization of manufacturers, sellers, distributers and peddlers accordingly and creating a data bank of the entire network to trace origins and roots of their business,” the CCPO said.The city police chief added that coordination with other agencies, including the Anti-Narcotics Force and the Excise Department is being improved in this regard. Meanwhile, several addicts were shifted to rehabilitation centers from different parts of the provincial capital in the second phase on Monday.Police took the addicts from Hayatabad and the cantonment and shifted them to the rehabilitation centres. Over 330 were admitted to rehabilitation in the first phase last month.
